Garbe Mohammed, a fourth-generation bead merchant, who has sold and traded beads across West Africa his whole working life told us about his passion for his craft and revealed some of his secrets - including a seven-layer chevron and Roman face beads.

There’s so much more to beads than just decoration
Waist beads are a traditional African accessory that consist of glass beads on a cotton string worn around the waist or hips. They come in different shapes and colors and may also include decorative crystal and stone. 

In Ghana waist beads are a symbol of puberty, femininity and sensuality. And also a decorative piece. 

Beads are treasured in the Ghanaian culture. From birth they play an important role in the customs and traditions of Ghana. 

But culture wise, it has different meaning. The Ada and Akans present it to their girl child at puberty. 

It also helps control your weight, if it rolls up then its an indication for one to loose weight.
